Homeless Man Arrested After Refusing to Leave Santa Clarita Store Entrance

Christopher McCullough, a 50-year-old homeless individual, was taken into custody late Tuesday night after refusing to vacate the entrance of a retail store in Santa Clarita. The incident took place at the bustling Granary Square shopping center on McBean Parkway and quickly drew attention from both shoppers and law enforcement, escalating from a simple loitering complaint to a physical confrontation.

According to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, deputies were called around 10:45 p.m. after store employees reported a man sleeping directly in front of their entrance. The man, later identified as McCullough, had reportedly been there for several hours. Staff noted that customers appeared hesitant to enter the store because of his presence and lack of response.

When deputies arrived and approached McCullough, he was reportedly uncooperative and verbally confrontational. “He refused multiple lawful orders to leave the property,” said Deputy Maria Lopez, spokesperson for the SCV Sheriff’s Station. “Our deputies tried to engage him respectfully and offered assistance, including transportation to a local shelter, but he declined all offers.”

As deputies moved to detain McCullough on trespassing charges, the situation intensified. The sheriff’s report states that McCullough resisted arrest and became physically aggressive, resulting in a brief struggle with officers. Additional backup was called to the scene, and McCullough was ultimately restrained and arrested without serious injury to anyone involved.

McCullough was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, and obstructing a peace officer. He is being held on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court later this week.

Local business owners and residents have expressed growing concern about the increasing homelessness issue in the Santa Clarita Valley. “We want to be compassionate,” said Jenna Lee, manager of the affected store. “But we also have to think about safety — for our customers, employees, and even the individuals staying outside. It’s a difficult and complex issue.”

McCullough, who has had previous minor encounters with law enforcement over loitering and public disturbances, is considered part of the area’s expanding unsheltered population. Santa Clarita has experienced a rise in homelessness in recent years, prompting demands for expanded outreach, emergency housing, and mental health resources.

Officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health have not confirmed whether McCullough is currently engaged with any outreach or support services. Meanwhile, local advocacy groups are urging stronger coordination between law enforcement and social service agencies to help prevent repeated conflicts involving homeless individuals.

The sheriff’s department is reviewing the incident to ensure proper procedures were followed during the arrest.
