Texas Teen Brothers Charged After Fatal Attack on Stepfather Accused of Abusing Sister

PHARR, Texas (January 2022) — Two teenage brothers from South Texas, Alejandro and Christian Treviño, along with family friend Juan Eduardo Melendez, were taken into custody following the death of their stepfather, Gabriel Quintanilla. His body was found in a field in McAllen on January 20, 2022, after a violent altercation allegedly involving the teens.
Allegations Behind the Deadly Confrontation

Two teenage brothers in Texas were arrested after allegedly confronting and ultimately killing their stepfather, who was accused of sexually abusing their 9-year-old half-sister. The confrontation followed a report from a minor alleging inappropriate contact by Gabriel Quintanilla, reportedly at an RV park.

Alejandro (then 18) and Christian Treviño (17 or 18 at the time) learned of the abuse and decided to confront Quintanilla. The situation escalated into a violent altercation, during which Quintanilla fled on foot. However, the teens, joined by friend Juan Eduardo Melendez, reportedly chased him down and assaulted him again.

Later, the group found Quintanilla wandering nearby, attacked him a third time—allegedly using brass knuckles—then loaded him into the bed of a pickup truck and left his body in a field. A local farmer discovered the body shortly after.

Serious Charges Filed

Christian Treviño and Juan Eduardo Melendez now face capital murder charges, as well as charges of aggravated assault and participation in organized criminal activity.

Alejandro Treviño, believed not to have delivered the fatal blows, faces charges of aggravated assault and organized criminal activity but is not charged with murder.

Stepfather’s Criminal History

Authorities later confirmed that Quintanilla had an active warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a child dating back to 2019 in an unrelated case. He had reportedly been avoiding arrest for years before his death.

Public Response and Legal Support

The case sparked widespread public sympathy, with petitions calling for leniency toward the brothers receiving hundreds of thousands of signatures. Many online supporters viewed the teens’ actions as a form of vigilante justice taken to protect their sister.

Even some public figures spoke out. Former judge Charles “Big Angry” Adams commented that most Americans could understand the brothers’ motivations, especially when reacting to such disturbing allegations.

Court Updates

During a February 2023 court appearance, Christian and Alejandro—both adults by then—had their bond amounts reduced to $150,000. Both entered not guilty pleas.

Juan Eduardo Melendez had previously been released in August 2022 on a $362,000 bond.
