Earlier this year, JD Vance sparked controversy with a speech promoting “ordo amoris” — the idea that people should prioritize love for their own families and citizens before helping immigrants. Pope Leo XIV disagreed strongly, reaffirming the belief that love should be unconditional, echoing teachings from Pope Francis. He even liked and shared posts challenging Vance’s views.
Leo XIV has also criticized Trump’s immigration policies, condemning the harsh treatment of migrants seeking safety and better opportunities in the U.S.
