Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, has made his views on immigration very clear: kindness and care should be extended to everyone, regardless of their origin. This compassionate stance has put him at odds with prominent U.S. figures like Vice President JD Vance and former President Donald Trump.
Earlier this year, JD Vance sparked controversy with a speech promoting “ordo amoris” — the idea that people should prioritize love for their own families and citizens before helping immigrants. Pope Leo XIV disagreed strongly, reaffirming the belief that love should be unconditional, echoing teachings from Pope Francis. He even liked and shared posts challenging Vance’s views.
Leo XIV has also criticized Trump’s immigration policies, condemning the harsh treatment of migrants seeking safety and better opportunities in the U.S.
This new pope’s compassionate approach marks a clear break from recent political rhetoric on immigration.
