Iran launched a large-scale counterstrike against Israel on Friday, firing roughly 100 missiles in two waves, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Why it matters:
The escalation came approximately 18 hours after Israel initiated military action against Iran, targeting its nuclear infrastructure and missile launch sites. The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of high-ranking military personnel and key nuclear scientists.
U.S. forces are actively assisting Israel in intercepting ballistic missiles, according to sources from both the Israeli government and a senior U.S. official.
During an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday, the American representative warned Iran against targeting U.S. forces or interests in the region.
“Let me be absolutely clear: no nation, militia, or individual should strike American personnel, bases, or infrastructure. Any such action by Iran will have serious consequences.”
The latest:
Just before 9 p.m. local time, air raid sirens blared throughout Israel as warnings of the incoming attack were issued.
Israel’s defense systems responded swiftly, launching dozens of Arrow interceptor missiles in an attempt to neutralize the threat.
Despite those efforts, several Iranian projectiles struck central Tel Aviv, according to eyewitness accounts and verified footage circulating online.
Emergency medical services confirmed that at least 21 people were injured in the attacks.

What they’re saying:
Speaking on national television shortly before the strike, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed a powerful response, claiming Israel would be left “defenseless.”
“The Iranian people will not allow the blood of our martyrs to go unanswered, nor will we overlook the violation of our airspace,” he declared.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement confirming they had hit multiple military installations, including airbases, under a campaign named “Operation True Promise 3.” Similar operations were carried out in April and October 2024.
On the other side:
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Iran had “crossed all red lines” by directing missile fire toward civilian areas.
“We will defend our citizens and ensure the ayatollahs pay a heavy price for these attacks,” he said.
A U.S. defense source confirmed that American air defense systems had been activated in response to the threat and emphasized that the protection of American personnel and assets remains a top priority.
Current situation:
Iranian state news reported that 78 individuals were killed and over 300 injured in the overnight Israeli strikes, with many casualties reported among civilians.

Israel’s assault targeted Iranian missile silos and command centers to minimize retaliation capabilities. Israeli officials have stated their operations are ongoing and could extend for several more days or weeks.
