Atlanta, GA — A high school graduation ceremony turned into a scene of chaos and horror on Saturday afternoon when a man allegedly opened fire on his stepmother in front of stunned families and students.
The incident occurred at around 2:15 PM at Brookside High School, just moments after the final names were called and students began tossing their caps in celebration. Witnesses say the suspect, 27-year-old Darnell Rivers, approached his stepmother, 48-year-old Lisa Rivers, during the outdoor reception area and fired multiple shots at close range.
“She was clapping for one of the graduates,” said Maria Jenkins, a witness who was standing just a few feet away. “He walked up calmly, pulled something from his jacket, and then we just heard three loud bangs.”
Security personnel at the event quickly subdued the suspect and held him until police arrived. Lisa Rivers was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital and is currently in critical condition. Doctors say the next 48 hours will be crucial.
A Family Feud Turned Violent
Authorities say Darnell Rivers had a long-standing conflict with his stepmother. Police Chief Alan Humphries confirmed that previous domestic complaints had been filed, but none led to charges.
“We are still investigating the motive, but this appears to be a targeted act related to ongoing family tensions,” Chief Humphries said during a press briefing.
Community in Shock
Brookside High School Principal Karen Liu released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the incident.
“Our hearts go out to all the students and families who were affected by this senseless act of violence on what should have been a day of celebration,” the statement read. “Counseling services will be available on campus starting Monday.”
The school district announced it would be reviewing security protocols for all future public events.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
Darnell Rivers is currently being held without bail and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.
