Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was discovered deceased on the morning of March 22 at her home in Alexandria, VA. According to local police statements, the initial investigation points to natural causes, with no signs of foul play.
Police responded around 9:18 a.m. after a report of an unresponsive woman at a Beverly Drive residence. Upon arrival, Aber was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the official cause is still pending confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, sources close to the investigation have indicated that a longstanding medical condition may have contributed to her passing. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances to finalize their findings.
Aber, 43, served as U.S. Attorney from 2021 until her resignation in January 2025 following the change in presidential administration. She led a team of approximately 300 prosecutors and staff, managing significant cases including financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation within the district.
A Virginia native and William & Mary Law School alumna, Aber began her legal career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2009 and was highly respected for her leadership and commitment to justice.
Her passing has drawn heartfelt condolences from many in the legal community. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed sorrow on social media, extending thoughts and prayers to Aber’s loved ones. Erik Siebert, her successor, praised her unmatched leadership and dedication, calling her “irreplaceable” and an inspiration to her colleagues.
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also recognized her impactful work, particularly in violence prevention efforts through Ceasefire Virginia, noting the lasting lives saved through her contributions.
As the investigation remains open pending the medical examiner’s report, those who knew Aber remember her as a dedicated public servant whose legacy will endure.
