Former Police Officer Drowns Saving Family in Selfless Beach Rescue

Anderson “Chase” Childers, a 38-year-old former Georgia police officer and one-time professional baseball player, tragically lost his life while heroically rescuing a family caught in a deadly rip current off Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

On Sunday afternoon, Childers and another bystander saw several swimmers struggling against the powerful ocean currents. Without hesitation, they rushed into the water to help. While the rescue saved a family of five, Childers was tragically swept away by the strong waves and drowned during the effort.

Pawleys Island Police Department honored Childers with a heartfelt tribute on social media, stating, “He died trying to save others.” His bravery and selflessness in the face of danger have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Originally from Kennesaw, Georgia, Childers had been living in Paulding County and served more than three years as a patrol officer with the Cobb County Police Department. Before his law enforcement career, he was a talented baseball player, having played for North Cobb Christian School and Georgia State University. In 2009, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and went on to play in their minor league system.

The Orioles expressed their condolences, saying, “We are saddened to learn of Chase’s passing and send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

The rescue unfolded in the presence of Childers’ wife and their three children, making the tragedy all the more heart-wrenching. Despite the grief, the family takes pride in his heroic act—saving lives by putting others above himself.

A GoFundMe page established to support his wife and children has already raised more than $230,000. The fundraiser honors Childers as a devoted father and husband whose last moments exemplified courage and sacrifice.

“In a heroic act, he saved a family of five in a moment of crisis, putting their lives above his own,” the fundraiser states. “Tragically, after giving everything he had, he was unable to stay above water, ultimately paying the highest sacrifice with his life in front of his three children and wife.”

Childers’ legacy of bravery, kindness, and love will continue to inspire all who hear his story.
