A routine traffic stop near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, on July 13, 2025, quickly escalated into a deadly incident that ended with two women killed and several others wounded. The incident began when a state trooper attempted to stop a vehicle flagged by a license plate reader. During the stop, the suspect shot the trooper and fled the scene, stealing another car before driving about 15 miles to Richmond Road Baptist Church.
At the church, the suspect opened fire on attendees, killing two women—34-year-old Christina Combs and 72-year-old Beverly Gumm—and injuring two men, one of whom remains in critical condition. Police officers responding to the scene shot and killed the gunman. Authorities have indicated the shooter may have had some connection to someone at the church, though the motive is still unknown.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the close-knit church community. As news spread, family members and friends turned to social media to share their sorrow. Rachael Barnes expressed her grief over losing both her mother, Beverly, and sister, Christina. She shared poignant memories, including that Beverly had authored a book of family stories, now carrying even greater significance.
Christina, a mother of five and hospital worker pursuing nursing studies, was expected to graduate later this year. Fundraising efforts are underway to assist both families affected by the loss.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Congressman Andy Barr, and Senator Rand Paul all issued statements offering condolences and commending the quick action of first responders.
The community continues to grapple with the aftermath as investigations proceed. This heartbreaking event has prompted renewed discussions about public safety, violence prevention, and community healing throughout Kentucky.
