When Jeni met her husband Ray, she was sure of one thing—she didn’t want kids. Ray, however, dreamed of a big family. Now, after more than 30 years, the Bonells are proud parents to 16 children and grandparents to two little ones.
Hailing from Toowoomba, Queensland, the Bonell family has gained recognition across Australia for their unique way of life and their impressive ability to manage such a large household. With nine boys and seven girls aged between 10 and 35, the Bonells have truly mastered organized chaos.

Managing a home with 18 people is no small task. Jeni and Ray depend on structure, teamwork, and humor to keep things running smoothly. Their weekly grocery bill is around $600, which includes essentials like 50 liters of milk, 14 cereal boxes, 45 yogurt tubs, and four dozen eggs. Chores are shared equally in the Bonell home. From age eight, each child takes turns on the family chore roster—whether it’s sweeping floors, cooking, or folding laundry. Their 12-year-old can even prepare a roast dinner for 20 people almost independently—a clear sign of their emphasis on responsibility and life skills. Jeni handles about three loads of laundry daily and usually takes a child along to assist with grocery shopping.

Despite their packed schedules, family time remains a priority. Dinner is a cherished ritual, often shared by anywhere from eight to twenty family members, depending on who is home. Some evenings are hectic, others more relaxed, but mealtime is always special.
Capturing the perfect family photo can be tough, Jeni admits, but she treasures the candid shots. “Someone’s always blinking or making a funny face—that’s what makes the pictures memorable,” she says.

Though active in their church and guided by their faith, the Bonells say having a large family wasn’t part of a grand plan—it simply felt right. Ray, an electrician, and Jeni work hard to support their household and take pride in their independence.
“Everyone has to find what works for them,” Ray says. “Having 16 kids isn’t for everyone, but it’s been the right choice for us.”
