In Manitoba, Canada, a devastating tragedy unfolded on Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 15 people. A bus carrying a group of senior citizens collided with a truck at an intersection near Carberry, approximately 170 kilometers west of Winnipeg. The passengers were reportedly en route to a local casino.
Deputy Commissioner Rob Hill of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba confirmed that “at least 15 individuals have been declared deceased following the collision.”
Ten other victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Both the bus and truck drivers survived the crash, though officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Photos taken at the scene showed overturned walkers and wheelchair parts near the tarps covering the deceased.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his condolences, stating that his heart goes out to the injured and to the families mourning their loss. Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson also expressed her heartfelt sympathies.
This marks one of the deadliest road accidents in recent Canadian history. A similarly tragic event occurred in Saskatchewan in 2018, which resulted in 16 deaths. Incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.
